All the megalithic monuments on this site, like those on Gipuzkoa's other megalithic sites, have been listed by the Basque Government; hence they can all be protected much more effectively than previously. The megaliths on these sites have also been carefully cleaned and their presence marked by signs so as to avoid destruction during work on tracks or the felling and restocking of areas of forest.
That all these protective measures are necessary is demonstrated by some of the megaliths that we're reviewing here, which suffered a lot of destruction during the last quarter of the 20th century. One example is the Pagobakoitza dolmen in Urbia which, in 1975, still had nine chamber slabs, but today has only two.
Pagobakoitza Dolmen, which suffered serious damage during the 20th century.
