Megaliths, among which are found the megalithic dolmens, represent the first western European architecture.

All these monuments existing in Gipuzkoa have been declared as classified as of value by the Basque government. This has allowed them to be better protected as the work undertaken nowadays in our mountains with heavy machinery for opening tracks and other forestry work put them at grave risk of deterioration and even of disappearance. In this way the priceless megalith of Baiarrate disappeared at the end of the 50’s.

On the other hand and with the help the same organism, the megaliths existing in Gipuzkoa have been cleaned and signalled. This work requires annual clearance in many mountains covered with brush and heather. In many cases trees that had been planted on the tumuli of the megalithic dolmens have been removed.
