Representations in Altxerri - Groups of figures

Graved bison

Altxerri is essentially a cave of bison - the animal most often represented.

However, there is also a very varied range of other species, including not only hoofed mammals - the favourites of the Magdalenian artists - but also carnivores, birds, fish and even a serpentine shape.

It has been said before that Altxerri dates from Upper-Final Magdalenian. Therefore Altxerri appears to date from later than Ekain.

The Basque Government hast declared the Altxerri cave "Bien Calificado", that is the highest qualification that the Basque cultural heritage law provides.
