portadaThis report is fruit of an effort with five collaborating UN agencies to improve the efficiency of international cooperation and the coherence of public policies in this innovative field. Its central idea is that creativity, knowledge and access to information are recognised as powerful drivers of development. This report presents a conceptual, institutional and public policy paradigm whereby the creative economy can expand globally, particularly in the developing countries.

“Creativity” in this context refers to the formulation of new ideas and the application of these ideas to produce original works of art and cultural products, functional creations, scientific inventions and technological innovations. There is thus an economic aspect to creativity, notably in the way it contributes to the entrepreneurial initiatives, feeds innovation, enhances productivity and increases economic growth.

It gathers and suggests concepts, methods and structures related to the creative economy and presents a compared analysis of successful practices and examples which are being processed in different countries, and proposes linear strategies whilst advocating that it is necessary to adopt inter-ministerial policies due to the multi faceted nature of the creative economy.

Among other issues, identification is given to the growing cameo of the rights of intellectual property as a tool to generate income revenues within the creative industries; the phenomenon of connectivity is analysed and its influence on production, consumption and commerce of creative products patterns. Also the importance of international policies and global events is examined.

For the first time official figures have been made available to analyse the global and local flows of commerce in creative goods and services between 1996 and 2005; providing empirical evidence that creative industries are one of the most dynamic emerging sectors in the global market. The figures speak for themselves; in the above-mentioned time period, the creative services experienced an annual growth of 8.8 %, a positive trend that is expected to continue throughout the next decade.
